White portland cement — IS 8042 (2015) Testing

IS 8042:2015 specifies chemical and physical requirements for White Portland Cement, including fineness, setting time, soundness, compressive strength and degree of whiteness. The cement must also meet specified limits for chemical parameters such as magnesia, insoluble residue, sulphuric anhydride and chloride.

As per the BIS reference for IS 8042:2015, the fineness of White Portland Cement should be not less than 225 m²/kg when determined by the Blaine method. Fineness testing helps evaluate cement particle characteristics and supports consistent performance.

IS 8042:2015 specifies that the initial setting time of White Portland Cement should be at least 30 minutes, while the final setting time should not exceed 10 hours. These requirements help ensure suitable handling, placing and hardening characteristics during construction.

Compressive strength testing is an important performance evaluation under IS 8042:2015. BIS laboratory information identifies testing at 72 hours, 168 hours and 672 hours using IS 4031 Part 6, helping verify the required early, intermediate and later-age strength of the cement.

Degree of whiteness is a specific quality characteristic of White Portland Cement. IS 8042:2015 requires a minimum reflectance of 70 percent for the neat cement ring. BIS identifies degree of whiteness as a specific test under Annex B of the standard.

The degree of whiteness is determined by measuring the reflectance of a prepared neat cement specimen using the method provided in Annex B. This test is used to assess whether the white cement achieves the required reflectance specified by IS 8042:2015.

Chemical evaluation can include the lime-to-silica, alumina and iron oxide ratio, iron oxide, magnesia, insoluble residue, loss on ignition, sulphuric anhydride and chloride content. BIS testing information identifies IS 4032 and applicable methods for these chemical determinations.
